Palliative care in the Eurasian Region: Pre-congress session at EAPC 17th World Congress Online

NEW SERIES: EXPLORING NEW DIMENSIONS AT #EAPC2021 …

THERE ARE JUST SIX DAYS TO THE 17TH WORLD CONGRESS ONLINE OF THE EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION FOR PALLIATIVE CARE (#EAPC2021), WITH LIVE SESSIONS ON 6 TO 8 OCTOBER, LOTS OF ON-DEMAND CONTENT, AND SOME IMPRESSIVE PRE-CONGRESS SESSIONS ON 5 OCTOBER TOO…

Four international palliative care organisations have teamed up with the EAPC to deliver a FREE pre-congress session that is a must for anyone with an interest in the development of palliative care in Eurasia. Dr Stephen R Connor, Executive Director, Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance (WHPCA) (one of the partner organisations), gives a glimpse of what you can expect at the session on Tuesday 5 October 2021 11.30 am to 1 pm CET. The session is free and open to all.

Dr Stephen R Connor

Palliative care has been historically underdeveloped in the Eurasian region, including in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Recently, there has been a sustained effort to bring more palliative care to Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) that were part of the Soviet Union. This effort is being supported by a partnership with the Russian Hospice Care Professionals Association (HPCA), The EAPC, the WHPCA, the American Eurasian Cancer Alliance (AECA), and PACED, a new UK charity supporting the advance of palliative care in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, started with Robert Twycross.

Bringing together palliative care leaders in the region

While efforts to collaborate have been ongoing for the past two plus years, the pre-congress session of the EAPC 17thWorld Congress Online will be one of the first opportunities to bring together palliative care leaders throughout the region. They will discuss developments, exchange experience, promote health, education, and research on palliative care to help develop and design country strategies in palliative care. The session will be in English but will have simultaneous Russian language translation available.

The session, entitled ‘Development of palliative care in CIS countries’ is free for attendees to join by registering here. (See flyer below). The session will be moderated by Diana Nevzorova and myself and will include a diverse faculty. Diana is Chief Specialist on palliative care of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and chairs the HPCA. She is a wonderful and effective champion for palliative care. Others contributing to the opening include EAPC’s own CEO Julie Ling, Eric Krakauer Director of Harvard’s Global Palliative Care Program, and Sophia Michaelson head of the AECA.

The session will include talks on development of palliative care in the Russian Federation, paediatric palliative care in Russia, pain relief in Russia, respiratory support in Russia, and teaching palliative care in Russia. A second section will focus on palliative care in other CIS countries including progress and obstacles in Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, and Tajikistan. The meeting will produce a Resolution at the end calling for further developments.

We hope this will become an annual opportunity to bring together leaders from the region to make progress with support from EAPC and the other partner organisations. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also taken an active interest in supporting these efforts. Anyone with an interest in the development of palliative care in Eurasia should seriously consider attending.

I hope to see you there!
