Professor Scott Murray, University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, and Dr Sébastien Moine, Université Paris 13, France, Co-chairs, European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) Reference Group in Primary Care, invite all those interested in palliative care in primary care to join them in Madrid.
Over the past few years, an EAPC taskforce in primary care has been working hard to document the reach of palliative care in primary care throughout Europe. We have also produced a toolkit on how individual countries can take forward palliative care in the community.
Now in 2017, we are set up as an ongoing ‘EAPC Reference Group’ to advise the EAPC on primary care issues. We have already this year summarised how a number of countries, notably Catalonia in Spain, Scotland, England, the Netherlands, France and Belgium, have each developed systems of integrated palliative care for people with advanced conditions. This was recently published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management. As well as listing and detailing different tools to identify patients with chronic conditions in different countries we identify the characteristics of integrated palliative care development. The paper gives ideas of how integration could be increased throughout Europe. We also report ethical challenges and emphasise the need for research to test the various tools and models to generate evidence about the benefits of these approaches for patients, their families and the health system. We thank Xavier Gómez-Batiste for leading in this publication.
So whether you are a palliative care specialist or a generalist feel free to come to our Open meeting at the 15th EAPC World Congress in Madrid next week. The Open Meeting is on Friday 19th May at 13.15-14.15 in Room N109. We will be encouraging people from all countries, especially those that have yet to develop palliative care in the community, to consider how this can be fast-forwarded in their own countries. Please check the online congress programme for details of other sessions relating to primary care including the Meet the Expert session, ‘Bridging Primary Palliative Care in Europe’ on Saturday at 08h00-08h45.
