EAPC recommendations on use of opioid analgesics in treatment of cancer pain published

The updated recommendations of the EAPC on the use of opioids for the treatment of cancer pain have been published in Lancet Oncology. The update was undertaken by the European Palliative Care Research Collaborative (EPCRC). Previous EAPC guidelines were reviewed and compared with other currently available guidelines, and consensus recommendations were created by formal international expert panel. These, along with evidence from a series of systematic literature reviews, formed the basis for the new recommendations. More information about the recommendations, in addition to other guidelines developed by the EPCRC, are available on the EPCRC website, together with a patient-friendly summary of the guidelines in English, German, French, Italian and Norwegian.

The final guideline is published in Lancet Oncology 2012; 13:e58-68:
Caraceni A, Hanks G, Kaasa S et al. Use of opioid analgesics in the treatment of cancer pain: evidence-based recommendations from the EAPC. A podcast with a discussion of the guidelines is currently available at the homepage of Lancet Oncology.
